The Fundraising Competition

I had my first Mommy Moment the other day. Geesh! I hope I don't have too many of these. I was perusing my Facebook newsfeed, and Robin posted the top 2 children in the fundraiser to raise money for new learning toys at Robin's Nest Childcare. Mason was losing to Ryker by $4.31. I think most people would be happy to hear that their child was in the top 2, but, of course, my mind immediately starts racing...

My first instinct was to find everyone I know and convince them that they could not live without Scentsy products because Mason NEEDS to win. Who am I kidding, I need to win! My second instinct was to write this one up as a loss and look at Mason and say, "Honey, you are not a loser. I love you so much." Then, the sensible rational reasonable side of me added, "Hey! Mason needs to learn that there are winners and losers in this word. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Better to learn that early, so he knows how to deal with loss." Which part do you think won?

Well, it wasn't that easy of a decision... I grappled with it through the night. When I got to school in the morning, I mentioned the story to Karen and Laney, and I guess Mason's just going to have to win. They both got on board right away to push the competitive side of my nature to win. I hope this doesn't have lasting negative consequences in Mason's life.

So, Mason is currently in the lead for his very first fundraiser ever! And, I've made it through my first parenting style moment relatively unscathed. Probably because I didn't actually decide how I would handle things for now on. Or, maybe I learned the best lesson of all... Just take each incident one at a time and move on.
